Very little about product choice is actually gendered. What matters is hair length, texture, thickness, the finish you want and the hold you need.
Short hair, strong hold, matte finish
This is the most common combination, and it usually points to a clay, a wax or a firm paste. Clays go furthest on matte and texture; waxes stay easier to restyle.
Thinning or fine hair
Heavy products flatten fine hair. Powders, texture sprays and light matte pastes add apparent thickness without weight, and a scalp-focused routine supports a fuller look.
Beyond styling
Frequent washing, heat and sun all show up as dryness eventually. A mild shampoo plus one conditioning step covers most routines without complicating them.
